How does the COVID-19 Rapid Testing Kit work?

tips covid 19 rapid test

The COVID-19 Rapid Testing Kit aims to identify two forms of antibody which have been produced by the body to fight COVID-19; Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and Immunoglobulin G (IgG).

IgM is present in the body after exposure to an antigen, which is a toxin or foreign substance. As well as being the largest antibody within the human body, IgM is the body’s first immune response to foreign material.

IgG is developed to assist with long-term immunity so that if the same antigen was found in the body again, the correct antibodies can be made to fight it. If both of these antibodies are found in the body, this is a high indication that the subject has COVID-19.

The test can also be used to determine whether these are early stage or later stage antibodies, helping to establish the state of infection of the subject.

What do I have to do?

These are the simple stages of the COVID-19 testing kits.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  2. Massage your index finger to stimulate the blood flow. Disinfect the top of your finger with the alcohol pad. Use the lancet to pierce the skin at the top of the finger. Wipe away the first drop of blood with a cotton pad.
  3. Use the dropper to collect a blood sample.
  4. Release a few blood droplets onto the test card.
  5. Apply plaster to the area to stop any bleeding.
  6. Place 2-3 drops of buffer solution onto the test cassette.
  7. Wait a maximum of 15 minutes, but please note that results could appear within the first 5 minutes.
  8. Take a picture of the test result.
  9. Compare the results to the chart provided.
  10. Place the kit into the additional box provided and send it back to the address below for us to dispose of, or dispose of the kit through contacting your local health services.

Results

There are 3 lines that can change colour on the test card. Initially, these lines will appear blue and will turn red if antibodies are detected. The top line is the Quality Control Line, the middle reports the detection of IgG and the bottom identifies IgM. The Quality Control Line should always change colour, as this indicates that the test has been successful. Please see below for what the readings mean:

  1. If only the Quality Control Line changes colour, then the result is negative. No COVID-19 antibodies have been detected.
  2. If the Quality Control Line has not changed colour, the test has failed, and you will need to do another.
  3. If the Quality Control Line and the IgM line change colour, the IgM that is specific to COVID-19 has been identified.
  4. If the Quality Control Line and the IgG line change colour, the IgG that is specific to COVID-19 has been identified.
  5. If the Quality Control Line, the IgM and the IgG line change colour, the IgG and IgM that are specific to COVID-19 have been detected.
